Computer Programming: A Process to Process

Recently, I have begun the process of teaching the 7th grade class the basics of computer programming. The plan is to have them be comfortable with coding enough to program an EV3 Mindstorm Lego Robot.

First the students need to know how to code and plan the actions of their robot before they can use them. I have made sure that they completely understand what they are doing.

So I have taught them how to use and make flowcharts. Flowcharts are used in computer programming to organize the ideas of the programmer. Coders use it to plan their codes for applications shortcuts, video games and other uses in our everyday lives.

There are few components to a flowchart.

  1. There are the terminators. They are the start and stop points of a flowchart. Above you will see it on the top and bottom of the chart. They are the ovals.
  2. Next is the process boxes. They are the steps that the programmer wants to take. Here it is the rectangular boxes.
  3. The arrows are used to determine the direction of the flow.
  4. Lastly we have a decision box. This is usually depicted as a diamond (Rhombus). Here a yes or no question would be posed. The yes answer and process would go under the bottom corner. The no answer and its process would go to the right corner. Here the student used recieving DIVA Dollars as their decision.
