The Arts and Crafts class and I have come a long way with the completion of the Laurelton Community Quilt. The students have chosen two job symbols that they feel represent their community the best. They have decorated each job symbol using the arts and crafts materials that I have provided. They have also been working closely with the sewing machine over the past few weeks. Since we only have three sewing machines available, only three students were able to work on the sewing machine at a time. Each student received about 10 minutes each to become comfortable with using the sewing machine and familiarize themselves with the different stitches that the sewing machine provides. Each student had at least 3 opportunities to operate the sewing machine.
The class and I have reviewed the anatomy of the sewing machine again so that they can become more comfortable using the machine properly. The students and I have also been reviewing the safety procedures that they need to follow when using the sewing machine. They have been using the sewing machine to sew the different fabrics and stitches onto their job symbol.
The quilt is in the shape of the outline of the Laurelton community map. The job symbols are being placed where the students feel it looks best. The students are continuing to enhance their decorating, sewing, tracing and cutting techniques. The students and I are very excited to see the progress of this project. I know that the students will be very happy with the final result of the Laurelton Community Quilt.
