The students have been applying what they have learned about basic, back and blanket hand stitching thus far in preparation for the quilt project. The students have explored symbols that represent the community and jobs in the Laurelton community. Based on the job symbol that they have chosen, the student’s have researched the job title, responsibilities and pay rate for each occupation. They will print them out and decide which symbol they would like to include on the Quilt. The job symbols that the students have chosen will be used as stencils to outline the symbol on 10×10 inch pieces of fabric to include in quilt. They will determine where they feel the symbol would look best. Students are exploring different techniques such as outlining stencils, painting and cutting out the symbols. The size and shape of the quilt has been finalized. It is still a work in progress however; I am very pleased with the results so far.

The arts and crafts class will also be working on Christmas decorations such as coloring pages of Santa Clause, Christmas trees, the Grinch and Snowmen. They will also be working on their personalized Christmas cards that they will be able to decorate on their own. Students are eager to learn how to properly manage and utilize the sewing machines.

In conclusion, I am very pleased with the students’ motivation and excitement towards the overall progress of the Laurelton community quilt.  Students are eager to learn how to properly manage and utilize the sewing machines. They are thrilled to notice all of their hard work pay off and see the Community quilt come to life.
