In the coming weeks the students will continue to make the different parts of their cities but will also be required to do independent research on what urban city planning really is. I want them to learn about what it takes to build and cultivate a functional successful physical city. They should be able to describe how the physical place affects how people living within a city actually function and get along and how planning properly makes for a great living environment.
The purpose of having the students build their own cities is to get them thinking critically about what their own city and neighborhoods have that they like and dislike and show how they would improve upon the areas that need change.
DIVAS (Digital Interactive Visual Arts Sciences) for Social Justice aims to bridge the digital divide by combining media literacy and cultural awareness along with a vast understanding of technology to encourage young women in under served communities to pursue careers in computer science and new media.
