The students of P.S 156 are embarking on taking ownership of a LIRR wall to show the pride and beauty of Laurelton . Twenty 4th and 5th graders are participating in DIVAS (Digital Interactive Visual Arts Sciences) for Social Justice after-school STEAM (Science Technology Engineering Arts Math) 6 week program at P.S 156. Students are learning mural design and robotics in the program. Through mural design, students are creating a mosaic at 225th street that will featured stenciled drawings created by them of flowers seen in Laurelton such as dogwood, azaleas , tulips and roses. On May 7th , 2016 students primed and painted the wall at 225th Street.
DIVAS for Social Justice plan to invite the elders and leaders of the Laurelton community to participate in the stenciling of the flowers for the final design.
DIVAS for Social Justice is grateful to have the support of Councilman Richards through CASA Funding though the Department of Cultural Affairs. The organization is looking forward to including in the stenciling of the final design with The Federated Blocks of Laurelton and Concerned Citizens of Laurelton. We welcome their support.
