Step It Up…

After breaking into teams and surveying the gym the true dimensions are 70 feet (Length) by 49.5 feet (Width) by 25 feet (Height). Some students took 50 steps while others took 90…

The students added their steps up, converted their shoe size into inches, divided by 12 and logged their renditions onto paper.

There were 4 groups who stood out in their estimations of and preliminary sketches.

Here is one group of 7th Graders (Manoah, Kayden  & D’Anthony). They estimated 66 feet long by 37.6 feet wide.20151223_132827-1

Here is a group of 8th graders (Dipo, Justin, Kenneth, Afinna, Mikayla, Ajani Simpson). Their survey was 69.79 feet length and 52 feet width.

Here is a group of 6th Graders (Christian, Jaden Duncan, Christophe) They measured a length of 65.60 feet and 39.16 feet width.

Here is another group of 7th graders (Zoe, Millonie & Shawna) Measurements of 72.83 feet and 51.55 feet were recorded.20151223_132843-1 The students stepped up to the task. They estimated well as these groups were less than 3-5% away from the actual measurements. The students now have an understanding of how to apply math skills to real life. They have a basic artist rendition on a space in their community that they will be having an influence on designing. The students will further apply these measurements to their future gym design with Ms. Semple and Ms. Veeraswamy.
