Welcome to Media Studies and Film 2017. I am so excited to work with a new core of students. I am looking forward to fresh ideas and imaginative stories. The students have started learning the foundations of film and media studies. I began the term by explaining all the elements of a film kit; the cameras, lights and sound equipment. I allowed the students to explore each piece of equipment on a personal basis. It was wonderful watching the students explore the cameras. As they looked through the view finder, they were fascinated with how the lens could change the look of an image.
As we progressed through the weeks, the student learned about shooting and camera angels. They learned the importance of using camera angels to tell a story. The received the opportunity to venture out of the classroom and into “the field” to shoot.
During our reflection period, the students spoke about how much they enjoyed learning about the cameras. They especially enjoyed their free exploration time where they could attempt to recreate camera shots they have seen in the movies.
DIVAS (Digital Interactive Visual Arts Sciences) for Social Justice aims to bridge the digital divide by combining media literacy and cultural awareness along with a vast understanding of technology to encourage young women in under served communities to pursue careers in computer science and new media.
